Home remedy for Menstrual cramps or Period pain

Menstruation is a natural phenomenon in women’s life. Yet menstrual cramps or period pain happens to be a very annoying problem for many. Girls of teenage suffer period cramp with most difficulty. Menstrual cramp though thought to be common during periods, if severe may disrupt regular activities.
Prostaglandin, a hormone-like substance that causes the uterine muscles to contract during menstruation are known to be the main reason behind these period pains.
Most women suffer from pain during their menstruation and many rely on medical drugs to relieve the pain leaving their body to have certain side effects. There are certain home remedies that can be adopted during period pain that are effective, less costly, and without side effects.
Here are some home remedy treatments that can
be used during menstrual cramps.

1. Heat

The easiest way to control menstrual cramps is by applying heat on the lower abdomen. The heat helps relax the contracting muscles in the uterus which is the main reason behind the pain.
·       Take a hot water bag and fill it with hot water (not boiling water as it may burn skin) or you can use a heating pad. An irregular plastic bottle filled with hot water can also be used.
·       Place the heating pad over the lower part of the abdomen and lower back. Apply the heat until you feel comfortable.
·       Taking a hot bath can also relieve pain and help feel relaxed.

2. Ginger

Ginger contains certain anti-inflammatory agents that help relax muscles that cause period pain. Ginger is a wonder herb that also fights fatigue related to premenstrual syndrome and also can help make irregular periods regular.
·       Chop or grind a small piece of ginger and boil it in a cup of water for a few minutes. Strain it and add a little honey and lemon juice. Drink this mixture three times a day during the menstrual cycle.
·       You can also add ginger in your food while cooking or use the ginger powder in your food while eating.

3. Basil

Basil is a holy plant in Hindu mythology also known as ‘Holi Basil’. It is easily available in gardens. It is a very effective herb for reducing menstrual pain and cramps. Caffeic acid present in the basis acts as pain-killing or analgesic properties.
·       Put one tablespoon of basil leaves in one cup of boiling water. Cover the lid of the vessel tightly and allow it to cool. Drink this every few hours to relieve cramps.
·       Crush a handful of basil leaves to extract the juice. Add two teaspoons of this juice to one cup of warm water and drink this three times a day while having period pain.
·       Fresh basil leaves can also be directly chewed or added to the food that you eat.

      4. Cinnamon

Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory, anti-clotting, and antispasmodic properties that help relieve menstrual pain.
·       Add one-fourth teaspoon of cinnamon powder into a cup of water. Let it for up to five minutes then add a teaspoon of honey then sip the liquid slowly. Drink two to three cups of this type of cinnamon tea one to two days before your period starts to prevent cramps during the period.
·       Similarly add half teaspoon of cinnamon powder and a teaspoon of honey in warm water and drink it three times during the first day of the period to reduce period pain.

     5.     Fennel

Fennel seeds are an integral part of a kitchen in most of the homes. So, it is easily available and cheap to buy. Fennel has antispasmodic, phytoestrogenic, and anti-inflammatory properties which help relax the muscles of the uterus which in turn relieves cramps and discomfort during periods.
1.     Add a teaspoon of fennel seeds to a cup of boiling water
2.     Simmer the mixture on low heat for five minutes
3.     Remove the boiling mixture from heat and strain.
4.     Add a teaspoon of honey and then mix it well.
5.     Drink this tea two times daily from two to three days before you expect to have a period. Continue drinking this tea as needed during the cycle.

     6. Papaya

Papaya is a potent anti-inflammatory agent in treating menstrual cramps. It has certain helpful nutrients like carotene, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C that help soothe the uterine walls and ease muscle contractions.
You can include papaya in your diet just before and during your period to minimize or eliminate pain.
